what is the canister for?

I have a vac hose that leads to the canister in the front driver's side of the vary front of the engine well. Can this be removed? does it affect how it runs, or emissions?

It's a vacuum reservoir for vacuum-run accessories such as the heater/AC and cruise control.

Re: what is the canister for?

hey five 7, there is one large hose connected to it. some of the hoses that lead to it, are rotted. these hoses come from a "devise" with other hoses mmmmm hard to explain.. It just seems to be a mystery. Im not sure how to present this question, but would these little hoses cause the engine to not run like it should if they are rotted?

Re: what is the canister for?

Yes,if your vaccume lines are dry rotted, cracked or have holes in them it will cause a vaccume leak and you`ll have drivability .performance and mileafe issues. The bad ones need to be replaced.

Are you talking about a little black plastic ball over in the driver side fender(1) or are you talking about a 6 to 7 inch tall cylindrical black plastic canister(2) located inside the engine bay bolted behind the headlights. If number one james is correct. If number two its the fuel vapor purge canister.Atany rate I would leave them both in place and replace the lines.

Okay, now with a better description, that's the vapor canister. Vents the fuel tank and collects gasoline fumes. Carb'd car? Collects vapors from the fuel bowl as well.

Re: what is the canister for?

Five kid, what exactly does the vapor canistor do? Is it necessary? do the lines leading to it need to be in top notch condition.. e.g not cracked or leaking?
