VORTEC HEAD VALVE SPRING QUESTION

Quich question, I have vortec heads on my 305 with 062 casting number. My question is simple. I've noticed that my heads have dual valve-springs. Does that mean that the springs have been beefed up by the previous owner???.....or does Vortec heads with the same casting number automatically comes with dual valve-springs????

My second question is the following: with the dual valve springs, does this mean I can run a wilder cam with out having to worry about valve float????

As far as i know, 062 Vortecs were never equipped with dual valve springs. The valve guide bosses are typically around 0.850" in diameter which prevents the use of dual springs. That means your heads must have been machined previously to accept those springs. Depending on the springs, you could have a very capable set of heads. You should also take the time to measure the maximum lift to determine the cams available to you.

And how would I go about figuring that out????....the lift I mean????

Do you have the tools necessary to remove the valve springs? The most accurate method involves removing the springs, reinstalling the retainer and locks on the valve stem, and using a dial gauge to measure the total travel. keep in mind a 0.060" safety margin is recommended by most manufactures. I can go into more detail if you would like, not sure of your skill/experience.

No it's ok, I understand. Only one thing though, when I get that distance of the valve travel, will this mean that the lift of the cam wont be able to surpass it???

Correct, if the total travel you measure is, for example, 0.550" - 0.060" = 0.490". In this case you could only consider cams with lifts (at the valve) of less than 0.490". Post the result of your measurements and we can help reccomend a cam.

I'm running 062 heads and comps 918 beehive springs on my Vortec heads with the .525 Lift LT4 hotcam No issues. The beehives alow more lift due to a thinner retainer.
