Im rebuilding my 305 tpi and before when I started the motor you could hear a ticking for about 5-10 seconds but then it went away...

Now my general instinct is ticking = bad lifters but if theyre bad why does it stop? well since I just ripped my motor out and ripped it apart and can look at the lifters up close i figured id ask if there was a way to tell if they were bad... if theyre not ill reuse em because new hydraulic roller lifters are pretty expensive... otherwise ill have to dig the extra money out =(

here are a few pics of the lifters:

I just wanna make sure these are still good before I put em in my fresh rebuild....

Thank You for your help

Re: bad lifters?
A set of Comp ones (p/n 97384) are about $200usd give or take.
New set of intake gaskets, time, hassles when you find your old ones are bad??.... hmmmm....

I recycled mine (why I cheaped out there after about 6 grand I dont know!). I'm somewhat kicking myself now, as I think I might need to go un-recycle them due to some valve train noise, and a random miss. Grrrrrr..... At least my $125 Vortec intakes are reusable if I'm careful!

They're almost impossible to look at and say 'theyre good'. You can see if one is bad sometimes (screwed roller, a gouge, etc etc) though. The tolerances in a lifter are down to 2 ten thousandths of an inch (yes, .0002 !!!) so even measuring them up to check is really impractical.

edit: Oh yeah - you can totally clean up and reuse the 8 keepers and the center spider, so don't bother replacing them if they're not damaged!

As far as gaskets go they are already bought but 200$ for lifters is outta reach right now lol and as far as cosmetics go you cant tell anything is wrong from what i see and yes I planned on keeping the keepers and spider im just concerned about the lifters and since you mentioned the .0002 tolerances its probably best to just scrounge up the 200$ =P

Thank You for your quick reply

All other comments are still welcome

Thanks =D

Re: bad lifters?
OOPS!

I know most would have figured it out by now, but... That part number I listed (97384), ditto on the price was an EDELBROCK not a comp part number which would be an 875-16!
