Re: valve lash and rotation
Here's kind of a dumb question. How do we know which is the intake or exhaust valve on the cylinder?
Re: valve lash and rotation
exhaust-intake-intake exhaust-exhaut-intake-intake-exhaust.
all by lining up the exhaust manifold andf intake manifold.

Re: valve lash and rotation
Actually all engines, or just about all engines, turn counterclockwise. Direction of rotation and left/right side of the car is always from the driver's point of view, not standing in front of the car.
Some front wheel drive cars turn clockwise because of how the engine/tranny is mounted. Honda is one.

Another way to tell is to look at the exhaust header the valve directly inline with the exhaust port and it's associated exhaust pipe is the exhaust valve.

#1 cylinder is always the one that's farthest ahead. If you look across the heads, you'll see that one head is more forward than the other. On a GM, #1 cylinder is on the driver's side. Ford is on the passenger side.
GM labels their cylinders 1,3,5,7 on the drivers side and 2,4,6,8 on the passenger side. Firing order is 18436572
When looking at the rotor in the distributor, it rotates clockwise when cranking over the engine.
