cam swap need some advice

i put this in this section because it is a drag car that sees occasional street time... mods feel free to move it

i have a 1pc rearmain 350 factory roller motor but currently it has a flat tappet xe274 cam. im worried my cam is goin flat and i wanna get it out of there asap before anything else gets ruined.

i def wanna go roller and my heads are already done up with springs that are good to .550lift

this cam seems like a good choice but says it designed for trickflow heads... i dont see why it wouldnt work with my vortecs

Re: cam swap need some advice

You need some compression for that cam, and it will be a PITA on the street. If you have the compression, and the exhaust side cleaned up a little on the heads it should work out great. The vortec heads seem to like a higher exhaust duration.

Seems like a decent cam. I dont think your goign to need that much CR to run that cam. PITA on the street???? People always say that but I dont really understand the problem. I dunno streetablity is a VERY subjective word to me lol

Re: cam swap need some advice

my springs are good to .550 lift so i think .539 should be ok. what confuses me is my current cam @.050 is 236/242 and advertised 286/292. but this trick flow cam at .050 is 230/234 and advertised is 292/296

Re: cam swap need some advice

Yes your springs might handle the lift BUT your heads probably wont flow that well at those lift numbers. I personally dont know a lot about flow numbers on vortec heads but im pretty sure they dont flow well over .450-500 lift. Also depends if you have done any work to them as well.
As for the duration numbers I think you should just compare duration at .050 because that is the benchmark for all manufacturers and the Adertised is usually a selling trick, I think, if im wrong someone chime in. I think of it as a speaker with RMS power and Peak power. The RMS power is what counts because the peak power is essentially a useless number.

So if your losing duration and gaining lift that wont net you any power because you heads wont flow up high anyway, then the cam swap might not be a good one. I would look around for proven cams with vortec setups that make good power and go that route.

Frist off, cool looking car. I think the trick flow cam would be better. It has a 110 LSA and the COMP Cams 12-601-8 has a 107 LSA that will cause the engine to have a rougher idle and more overlap.

Re: cam swap need some advice

first off thanks and second i have a 2800 stall and love the sound of a rough idle so i'm lookin forward to the 107lca it will also tighten up my powerband so i dont have to rev it out as far... stock bottom end you know...
