Need Urgent help! Steering column issues

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my steering column, its a 83 z28 no tilt no cruise. I can turn my car on but then it wont shut off. I can turn the key back but it does nothing and once i get it shut down even with the key in the off position the dash still has power, lights are lit up as if you were starting the car. I have the column out of the car and all disassembled but can`t find any problems except for some plastic shavings and bent springs that I don`t know where they came from. If anyone can tell me what might be going on or could provide me with an exploded diagram of the column that would be great! I need to drive back to New Brunswick tomorrow night!

Thanks Steve

Re: Need Urgent help! Steering column issues

it could be a few things.
the switch could be loose or bad, the actuator rod could be messed up, there is a plastic gear that could be bad, or the rack is worn out or broken.

this may give you enough info,

there is some info here for jeeps, but they used the GM columns,

these are for tilt, but one of them may be of help,

Re: Need Urgent help! Steering column issues

Wow i think I`m in over my head, I have a lot of bent up springs and shredded plastic with no place to go. I`ve been doing a bit of searching and couldn`t really find an answer. Will an 85 tilt column from a 5sp z28 fit in place of a 83 z28 non tilt 5sp.

Re: Need Urgent help! Steering column issues

it should bolt right in.
i believe the connectors should also plug in with no problems too.

Re: Need Urgent help! Steering column issues

Well i ended up leaving the camaro home Im going to try and go back sunday to get it. The tilt column did bolt in but after I put my steering wheel on the spring was pushing way to hard on the blinker assembly {i think} and now every time you turn the wheel it makes a clicking noise and turns on the blinkers. I have no clue whats going on...
