loud screech coming from bellhousing
l just got my 383 stroker back from the builder, with a 168 tooth flexplate, and upon warm up l'm getting a nasty screeching noise from the bellhousing area, l went in to examine it closer, and l found that the flexplate "appears" to be interfering with the starter gear. (as if the starter gear is not retracting enough. l checked to make sure the trans and engine are bolted snug l checked the torque on the flexplate, tq converter bolts. my main concern is that when l check for any wear marks on the flex plate and starter gear, theres nothing! l see tiny sparks emitting from the starter side of the flexplate though, and the noise is terrible! any input at all would be much appreciated, l'm totally stumped! (4-bolt main 383 stroker, 168 tooth flywheel, TH700R4 trans, hitachi high torque mini starter)
thanks

l might've just figured it out, theres washers between the flexplate/converter bolts, but l still don't see any signs of wear on the caps of the bolts!

bought new tq converter bolts, installed @ 34 ft lbs. and still have the same problem, manually turned the engine, with no interference problems, what is going on?!?

Re: loud screech coming from bellhousing
like I said above you probably need to shim your starter.
if its too tight it will engage the flywheel to start but once the engine is running it cant release. the screech you here is most likely the starter gear being spun too fast

Re: loud screech coming from bellhousing
after about 10 minutes of watching the flexplate while the engine was running l finally noticed that the flexplate would barely touch the starter gear on one side (as if the starter gear wasn't retracting enough, and sure enough the starter wasn't torqued down enough! if l would've just checked the simple things first! thanks for your input everyone l appreciate it! l feel like a moron.....
