another engine build.
well i got a new job and im starting to make some money. im gonna build up a 350, up to 300 hp and 330 or more torque. (still want a DD). got my first paycheck, and i got my first of many things im going to need.
i know theres lot of different engine build threads on this site, but everybody is different!
id like some good torque, and bottom end speed, but some decent high end speed as well. gettin from 0-60 quickly is what im trying to achieve, and getting from 60-120 at a decent rate is good to. so im going to find a complete running 350 with around 100K. not really lookin for a certain "type" of engine, but i would like to get an LT1. that prolly wont happen, so lets just use a base block 350 from around an 80-90 vehicle. id like to use the original crank and rods and pistons, but depending on how everything looks when i tear it apart, i might need to get everything new. im not lookin to spend a fortune, but i am lookin to get some dependable parts. might have to buy a few of these things used though. like heads. im thinkin a 2K budget. i can get a 350 for 200 bucks (i have LOTS of sources) so we'll say 1800 is what ill be able to spend. already bought my first part, so the project has already begun! i feel like i can do this with 1800 bucks if i dont have to buy crank and pistons and rods. again im not lookin for 500hp, just 300. ive read that a decent cam and some good heads (vortec) i could gain at least 70 hp.
this is a list of things i know im going to need, but dont know what kind to get.
camshaft - have no idea what lift/duration etc im going to need.
heads - going to get some used ones, more than likely aftermarket unless i find some vortecs. when i buy the heads, ill have them ported and polished and ill rebuild them. what parts should i get for this?
flywheel -
crankshaft -
pistons -
rods -
distributer - dont really wanna spend 300 bucks on a dizzy, id like to use a regular one if i can, i have a new one that i got for 80 bucks at a liquidation and i hope it would work.
carb - i have a 600 holley, i dont think a 600 would work with 300hp. i have a 750 dumble pumper that needs rebuilt, i know that would handle 300 hp easily.
intake - i bought an Edelbrock Victor Jr for $100
headers - i have some headers already, they aint the best but im sure theyre better than some.
exhaust - already have a 3" exhaust, but i will be going true duals with glasspacks.
also what kind of fuel pressure would i need for this? i plan on beefing the suspension up as well obviously.
ill be using a 700r4 tranny and ill be getting a posi with 3.42 gears.
so what do you guys think? i need parts that will work together and work well. and also trying to get DECENT gas milage. i know 300hp and good gas milage dont really work together, but id like to get the best i can get.
and just because im curious, would a victor jr intake work on a 305? i have a regular q-jet intake and i wanna get rid of it for something better. i could use the intake that i just got for right now, if it would work. would it add any hp? my 305 is soooo slow

Re: another engine build.
alright so my 'sources' show me an engine tonight. ran the numbers and i know its either a 302.....69....4 bolt main...Z-28 Camaro, 327.....69....2 bolt main...Trucks and industrial, or a 350...69-80...2 or 4 bolt mains. casting number is 3970010. the front stamp is V03 either D or 0 1TJZ. so V03D01TJZ or V0301TJZ anybody got any idea which of those 3 engines it is? i have no vin since its just an engine thats sittin around under a tarp.

okay here are the casting numbers for the heads 333882 it shows that they are -
year casting # CID Intake Exhaust CC
1970-80333882 350,400 1.94 1.5 76
are these heads any good? like 300 hp material or should i just sell em for 50 bucks and get some better ones.

Re: another engine build.
You can build a 350 that'll make 300 hp with 882s, but put vortec heads in that same build and you'll be up by at least 40 horses. That block might work, but you'd do well to find an '87-up block with provisions for factory roller lifters.

Re: another engine build.
you might be right to find a newer engine. a 70's engine obviously has more wear and tare than a 90's block. the 70's block is free, but i might have to replace the whole rotating assembly, and that alone would pay for a good 90's engine with a solid rotating assembly. ill keep my eye out.
im going to go with vortec heads. im pretty sure the victor jr will bolt to a vortec head. not sure which years of vortec head though. i see some on ebay for around 400 bucks. any certain type is should look for?
thanks Atilla.
