ok so i just figured out by reading other threads that im an idiot because i put the cam in and line up the timing dot to dot on the sprokets thinking TDC. but apparently both dots are supposed to point straight up? because that is what i just read in another thread. so what now do i have to break it back apart?

Once you turn the crank over 360 degrees, both marks will be pointing up. You just need to pull the dist, rotate the engine one revolution and stick it back in the way you had it. Or you could pull the dist and rotate it 180, but that wouldn't match the textbook orientation.

well i just wanted to say that you rock i did it already but that was before i set the engene to TDC and all that good stuff so now that i knew how to set all that and now that i have set the valve lash accourding to my haynes manual for each rocker , i turn it 180 and it fired right up thank you very much i know that was a rookie mistake but if you had not pointed it out to me i may have just gotten more and more frustrated and never figured it out now if i could just have somebody check which wire is the temp wire and let me know what color it is and where it comes from i would be set

do it by turning off the crank one full revolution. remember that our engines are four stroke and the cam turns at half the speed of the crank.
the 180 on the dizzy solution is too easy mess up and be a tooth off.

Thanks, but no biggy really. After you've done it a few times, it's pretty easy. I made the same mistake the first time I put a timing chain in. I had my dist in and out several times over the last week (including replacing it) trying to track down what appeared to be an ignition problem. Turned out to be the injectors instead, coulda saved myself a bunch of time (and money) changing unneeded ignition system parts if I'd just shot a bit of starting fluid in it when it wouldn't start. So see, I'm not really all that clever.

ha ha ya well more clever than i.. now setting the timing for actual driving and not just the ability to start im sure is going to be fun.
