Hey guys, thinking about buying this 89 camaro rs this guy has for sale for $500. She has some wheel well surface rust (only on the inner lips so far, not visible from outside). No rust bubbles that i can see, under has the normal surface rust. The interior is slightly shocking though. It's actually not bad :O.


Ok, now down to the issue.

The engine was orgionally a 305 TBI, they replaced it with a 350 (haven't pulled the block # yet). The 350 has obviously been overheated (though the seller claims it hasnt). The thermostat and radiator have both been replaced, and the new thermostat is leaking.

Issue #2

The engine seems to idle okish, no big misses or anything. There is what sounds to be valve train knock on cylinder 5 (back near the firewall on driver side). Sorta sounds like an spark. This noise follows up with revs. Also the tach is very jumpy (the engine isnt), the tack jumps 500rpm at a time. Now the big part, when you get on the engine, she's very choppy.

I've come to the conclusion of possible issues with spark (plugs, wires, distrib), carb not tuned, or a slacked timing chain.

What's your guy's ideas?

 

The tach is a possible indication of an ignition problem. When the coil firings become erratic, the tach will go all over the place.

 

thanks for the reply, i was thinking the same thing as well.

However, being origonally tbi,is there any difference in grounds/wires for the tach? It sorta looks like a loose ground :x
