Re: question about SBC 400

400 sbc is a hard engine to keep cool cause theres not much material between the cylinder bores and if its bored to a 406 then theres that much less. Id go with a 383 stroker.

Re: question about SBC 400

Nothing wrong with it if done correctly. Cooling issues are a non-issue if adequate parts are used.

As for the block itself, depends a lot on the intentions. If it's just a street cruiser, then sure a stock block would probably be alright. If it's a race block, then I would go aftermarket.

Re: question about SBC 400

i should of put this in the begin so everyone knew what i was thinking of doing.. Sorry.. I am think of building a 406 for my camaro to have a street car and run down the track once in awhile. Spray it with nitrous (200 shot) every once in a while. I was going to buy a stock block and buy forged crank, connect rods, and pistons and run ARP bolts, than take it to the machine shop to get all the work done and get a short block build. I know what i will have to do to the heads. I just dont want to build it and run into problem after problem. As far as the cooling goes i was go to redo all of it and buy a brand new Be Cool Rad, and build a great cooling system with Summits Help.

Re: question about SBC 400

I would be very carefull when you go to buy a 400 block. If you have the option, have some blocks sonic tested for wall thickness.

I would almost go with a forged 383 too. Just because of the larger availability of a good core block. 200 shot on a stock block 406 worries me. Not a ton, but a little bit.
