Black smoke from exhaust?

I ran my rockers today and I think I tightened them too much because black smoke is coming from my exhaust now where there was no smoke before. I thought one of them were ticking but now I'm thinking its my exhaust because after I tightened them the tick didn't stop...what do you guys think?
