another cam shaft ?

I am thinking about going to a different cam in my 350. Goodwrench block everything stock as far as I know except for Edelbrock Performer Intake, Holley 600cfm carb, Headers with 3" exhaust from y-pipe back to a Cherry Bomb muffler and dual 2.5" outlets. No computer.
It's a daily driver most of the miles will be street and highway driven.

The cam I was going to go with is a Lunati Street Avenger Cam and Lifter kit, Duration 278/288, Lift .422/.444

Would this be a good choice?

Re: another cam shaft ?

This is what is in the motor now unless one of the guys that had it before me changed it.
Hydraulic flat tappet cam (.383''/.401'' and 112° lobe separation

So would the one I picked out give me more horsepower.
Also I would like to get a little more top end towards the end of fourth gear and through fifth gear there is a dead spot. I could be on the gas, but it doesn't pick up that much until my rpm's are almost close to 4,500 in fifth gear.
It is fast but not like I want it to be.

Re: another cam shaft ?

I downloaded the Camshaft program from Comp. Cams. After filling out the information at least what I knew it said my engine was putting out 334HP at 5,000 RPM and like 400 something torque which I highly doubt. Anyways this is one of the camshafts it said I should go with just wondering if anybody has ran it and if would be a good choice.

I have a little extra money and would like to get my car running again so I can drive it. Since I just put in the new transmission.

Re: another cam shaft ?

read it wrong 278 hP and 300 and something Torque. But anyways I was reading the installation notes on the Comp cams website and it said that there is machining required on heads.

What exactly needs to be done with them if I install this camshaft?

Re: another cam shaft ?

That cam would install with no machining, but it'll be all done by 5000 rpm.

What do you mean by it will be all done by 5000 rpm? I ordered the kit from summit with the springs and everything for $280 then ordered Comp. Cams Chromemoly Magnum Push rods.

How much more horsepower and torque will this give me? Don't need an exact number 20hp?

Re: another cam shaft ?

You're exhaust limited. a 350 engine, with an exhaust port that flows 135-140 cfm at .500", with an exhaust duration of 218 degrees at 0.050", it'll be all done by 5000 rpm. It might be okay pulling to 5500 in first, but you'll never see 5000 in overdrive.

Re: another cam shaft ?

Then it should be fine I don't plan on spinning it any faster then 5,000 anyways. Thanks for the reply's and information I don't really know anything about this stuff just learning as I go. All my parts should be here on Wednesday then the fun part of tearing it all down and installing the new parts. I am looking forward to it but not at the same time. It sucks when you are stuck working on your own car with nobody to BS with for days on end. Hopefully I do everything the right way.
