Bad clutch switch?

I have a 5 speed 1991 chevy camaro z28 with a 305tpi. Lunchtime today, the weather was dry and hot, I tried starting the car and nothing happened, the starter motor didnt engage, no clicking from the solenoid. The battery is good, and is showing 12v on the dashboard indicator.

I got out of the car and called a few people to get some possible answers, but I had a last ditch effort to start it before calling AAA. And surprise surprise it fired up first time.

Anyway I picked up my spare key, just in case it could be the resistor in the key thats there for security, that could be going bad, so if it happened again I could try the spare and see if thats the problem.

Later on today, I had probably put about 40 miles or so and at least 4 successful starts on it by this time, and it happened again. This time in the rain, in case that has any effect...... The spare key was no good, and after several goes I could not get it started. I am thinking the clutch switch could be bad?

SUCH A CLUTCH

Here’s how to verify.

Connect a small 12 volt lamp across the clutch switch, and mount it where you can see it.

If the clutch switch is open when it’s supposed to be closed, and you try to start, the lamp will light.

If you experience the problem and the lamp does NOT light, the clutch switch is OK.

Re: Bad clutch switch?

I had a problem of the hook on the switch that went through the pedal sliding out and when I went to go start it, she buzzzed at me as if I wasn't pushing the clutch in. I put the hook back through and put a ziptie on the other end so It wouldn't slide back through.

Re: Bad clutch switch?

Right, now i am very confused. As the clutch switch was only 6 dollars and an easy swap, i did that. Still had the problem, although still intermittent, so it definitely didnt make things worse. So then I took it to my local shop and they diagnosed it as the solenoid, but being part of the starter motor assembly, they replaced the starter/solenoid assembly with a new one. It obviously fired up fine in their lot when i drove it away $230 worse off. Then the problem came back again.

So are there any ideas what could be causing it now? My only thoughts are a bad connection or wire, maybe from the starter to the ground?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

OR - CLOSE EYES, THROW MORE PARTS

Throwing parts at it doesn’t work.

Following my above post would have saved you $236.00.

If you believe you installed the replacement clutch switch correctly you can use the Light Bulb Method on the starter solenoid.

Wire the bulb across the solenoid.

If it doesn’t light when you try to start, you will know the problem is before that area.

Divide and conquer.
