i noticed a rotational bearing noise starting on my car. to diagose, i removed all accessories and belts and started the car on the battery... noise stll there. it's a scraping sound that i would say is a crank shaft bearing. i know this is not much to go on, but any ideas anyone?

if it is a bearing... what should i do with the car. lately, i've invested about $4k and am about broke. i could see fixing the bearing, or whatever, myself (horrendous task) then selling. or parting out, maybe. any advice is appriciated.

if parting out is the way to go, would anyone guess on a part out value?

if you think it is a bearing, then don't run the motor anymore, or you could mess the crank up. take the oil pan off and check it out.

Next time, save yourself a bunch of trouble. When a new noise occurs, get a long screwdriver, put the metal tip on a part, and gently place the plastic handle against your ear - acts like a stethescope and makes noise ID a breeze.

if its an auto tranny i would make sure the torque converter dust cover isn't damaged or just take it off. i can't recall and engine bearing ever making a scraping sound, usually a knock or crazy oil pressure

the car is the same as in my signature, engine rebuilt about 25k mi ago, tranny recently replaced, had lots of problems at the shop seemingly unrelated... replaced fuel pump, fuel pressure reg, added an aftermarket fpr, insulated the muffler from the gas tank, insulated fuel lines near left hedder. the car had fuel issues, including vapor lock, low pressure directly after the 700r4 replacement. finally it was running pretty good, fast... now this problem.

i hope it's something other than a bearing. the dust cover is just platic and wouldn't make the kind of sound i'm hearing, i think, but i will check, thank you.

the sound is like an bad altenator bearing, but like i said above, i took all the belts off and started... hear the same sound.

i'm not driving it much, but did drive it today biefly... it was more quiet after sitting all week, but still the nasty sound. i'll try the long screwdriver trick, too.

i had a similar problem with my 74 k5 blazer. the damper was scraping on a bracket

skirkland... you know, that was my first thought. the sound seems to be coming from the harmonic balance. when i took off all the belts and started it up on the battery, it sure seemed to be coming from the damper, but I thought that was impossible since there are no moving parts in the damper, right? I will look closer when i have a chance to see if anything is scrapping.... thanks
