since i got this iroc last november, the engine has displayed low oil pressure, 20 or less at idle and no higher than 30 at speed. i installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge, no change. i replaced the oil pump with a milodon high pressure/volume oil pump but no change. the engine does not overheat or does not make noises like spun bearings. what could be the problem. i put 10/30 oil in the engine. should i consider putting in straight 40w or 20/50w to increase pressure.

 

I'd be it just means your bearings are worn out. I wouldn't beat on it too much if it's only going to 30 psi at full throttle.

The old rule of thumb is 10 psi per 1000 RPMs though, so as long as you're above that, dont worry about it.

 

nice camaro, when i'm finished restoring mine, a good paint job will be the last thing. do you recommend a thicker oil like 40w or 20/50 because of the worn out bearings. i know in the future i will overhaul this motor but not until it needs it.

 

thicker weight oil will help pressure but can also cause other issues as it doesn't flow particularly well. So for day to day street driving i think switching to a higher weight oil would do more harm than good. Ide say just keep up with your regular oil changes with 10-w30 and thats about all you really can do in my opinion. Maybe if theres a sludge build up if might clear up with a little regular maintenance. I assume you replaced the oil filter at some point as well correct? lol Also I dont mean to be insulting by that so I hope you dont take it as such but things that seem like common scene things that most consider can be assumed are the things that are overlooked in diagnosis.

Yes... hell.. if the rings are good I dont see any reason why you cant just pull the motor out and replace the bottom end bearings. Spend $20 bucks or whatever it is and have new bearings through the whole bottom end. Maybe rod bolt stretch would be a concern, I dont know?
