New Cam, Piston->Valve Clearance

I am currently looking to swap cams in my 383, I was running fuel injection and have sense switched to a holley 750dp. Now I would like to get a little more cam in it this winter. I was looking at the Comp XR294HR:

294/300 adv.
242/248 @ .050
.540/.562 (.579/.599 with my 1.6 rockers)
110LSA

I am using a 5.7" rod, along with some forged SRP flat top slugs (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SRP-138089/). The block itself has been zero decked.

My question is am I going to run into piston to valve clearance with this cam? Or is it just something I am going to have to buy and check clearances to see if it is going to work? I would rather not like to have to pull the slugs and replace with some dished pistons.

Re: New Cam, Piston->Valve Clearance

I think there is a strong possibility you could have clearance issues in many areas. For one 383s in many cases as im sure u know want small base cams for clearance. Yor may be ok it may not be and im not sure if that cam is a small base cam or not. Then theres the max lifts. You will absolutely need new springs but depending on your heads your heads may not have the capability of that much lift at least without machining. lastly theres the pistons again its hard to say if it will work or not as every set ups different but again at just about .6 inch lift ide say theres a strong possibility there could be a problem. As always theres no way to tell youll really just have to give it a try but some things to consider anyways.

I know that I will need new springs, I am prepared for that. The heads themselves are AFR 195 eliminators. They are the 75cc chambers so I am hoping that will give me a little extra fudge room.

Re: New Cam, Piston->Valve Clearance

Well im not sure what the maximum lift the AFR 195s at least without machining. Your best bet is to give AFR a call and ask them about that one. As far as the cam because the duration is so long and the lift is so great especially with those 1.6 rockers i would check our those clearances very thoroughly. Again the only way to know for sure is to get the cam but i have a feeling you will have to lose the 1.6 rockers at least.

Re: New Cam, Piston->Valve Clearance

*Update*

Just for reference in case anyone wants to know. I degree'd the cam in at 106.5* intake center line. With the AFR 195 eliminators 75cc, SRP flat tops with 5cc valve relief, and a zero decked block I came in @ .18 on the exhaust and .20 on the intake. This was also without the .039 thick head gasket!

This was NOT the small base circle version either.

theres hundreds of ways to destroy an engine, but a common route is trying to compress solid objects in the combustion chamber
