1987 GTA Headlights won't go down

They go up together, and used to go down together, headlights work fine. Apparently the 87-90 uses an ECM for the headlight buckets, do they go bad, can they be fixed?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Well they do go bad an thats probably your problem. They cant really be fixed. I mean theoretically im sure they could but its one of things without some background in electronics and a supply of old electronic parts not going to happen. Best bet is to go to the junk yards and fine a new headlight control module.

try turning the ***** next to them, like what three 6 mafia says, " slob on my **** like corn on the cob, check in with me and do your job" joke. could be faulty switch, stripped gears, or bad motors, relays

Wow. I just got through answering a similar kind of problem yesterday, in another thread. is your best friend.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...t-go-down.html

The don't use the ECM your thinking of.

They use their own controller box, that is basically separate circuits inside 1 box, so if 1 side fails, the other should still work.

It's a square box on the firewall, drivers side, under the hood. With everything off & when they should be down, pop the hood & tap on it/lightly hit it. Chances are, it is a bad circuit sending the close signal to both sides (if both sides are bad).

If they go down then, you've narrowed down your problem search. 4 screws open it up & you can look inside for broken circuits, dirty relay contacts, etc. Wouldn't hurt to fold a strip of sand paper over & use it to sand/clean the insides of the mechanical contacts, while your in there.

All pins and inside of module look great, doors still up. Anybody have any other ideas? The motors seem to "run-on" after the doors are up, is this meaningful?

I'll check my upull for another module.

Re: 1987 GTA Headlights won't go down

If the motors run on, that would indicate a bad circuit inside the motor itself.

The basic way they work is, when they hit the stop....The resistance increases, "overloading" the motor. When the resistance is seen, they are designed for the circuit to turn them off, as to not actually overload.

It is sounding more like a motor problem, than controller problem. Now that you mention the motor run on.

That makes sense, but it is odd that both are affected, and it came on recently. The run-on has always been for both, and both opened and closed fine, and now both stay open.

Oh well, at least they are stuck OPEN!
