valve adjusting !!!

ok so im adjusting my valves on my 88 lo3 and im reading the instructions on how to do it from the haynes manual , and im following the directios but when working on intake valves 1-5-7 i tighten them until i reach zero valve lash the the 3/4 turn and still its the rocker arm wiggles just a little bit yet the pushrod is tight as heck ! ok , so then i crank the crankshaft 360 degrees to do the exhaust valves and i only have to adjust 1-3 " btw im only doing my 1-3-5-7 because someone messed with them " then i check all my othe valves that i had previously adjusted and they are loose , i can spin the pushrod , and when i try to adjust number 3 on the intake it only takes 2 turns to reach zero valve lash whereas it me 7 turns to reach zero valve lash on all the other valves , wtf is up with this ??? any suggestions ?

Re: valve adjusting !!!

the manuals all talk about "spinning" pushrods... dont do it that is more of a art than anything

what they mean is to remove all slack IE there is no play vertically in the pushrod between rocker and valve do not try and tighten them untill you cant turn the pushrod...

they mean NO SLACK ONLY then go 1/2-3/4 turn more

Re: valve adjusting !!!

the lifters are bleeding down on the valves that you already adjusted. it's ok.

Re: valve adjusting !!!

so is it ok if the rocker arm wiggles a little bit after you have adjusted the valve ? and is it ok if you can still spin the pushrod?

Re: valve adjusting !!!

yes you should be able to spin the push rod when the lifter is on the heel of the cam its lowest point...

i only use the method you are using as an initial set up on the stand once the engine is in and running i re-adjust with the engine running

Re: valve adjusting !!!

ok so from being @ tdc on cylinder #1 on the copression stroke i adjust the valves the manual said to adjust , then i rotated my crank shaft 360 * and im supposed to be @ tdc on cylinder 6 then i could adjust intake on that cylinder , but its copressed as hell and i really cant adjust it , is this supposed to happen ? and btw if i ran my car without the valve covers it would get messy .. real messy

Re: valve adjusting !!!

cylinder 1 and 6 are companion cylinders. they should both be at tdc at the same time.

Re: valve adjusting !!!

the book says , position cylinder one @ tdc on the copression stroke , adjust 1-2-5-7 intake valves and 1-3-4-8 exhaust valves . Then rotate the crank shaft 360* and this should put cylinder number 6 @ tdc on the copression stroke . Then adjust intake valves 3-4-6-8 and adjust exhaust valves 2-6-3-7 NOTE: i am only doing the drivers side of the engine since this was the only side that was messed with . i do all this and when i rotate the crankshaft all the previous valves i had adjust come loose and i cant adjust 3 intake valve because its compressed and it takes very little to tighten it and it dosent take as much as it took all the other valves . what a m i doing wrong?
