First of all I am amazed at the knowledge of the folks on the boards and are very appreciative of the info that I have gathered.

I have yet to find a GENERAL How-to on an engine on the boards.
I may be asking for too much but I was looking for a build from oil pan to carb or TBI ( dont know which way im going yet ).


My reason for asking is that I recently bought a block from the autofair in Charlotte NC. It is from a 94 chev. truck casting # 14093638. Currently it is at the machine shop getting checked and honed. I bought it for $100 and it has already been bored .30.

Now I will admit that I am a newbie at building an engine. I could get someone to build it for me but that isnt the way I want to go. I want to learn to build it on my own with the help of friends and you guys. I want to be able to say that I built my engine and be proud of what I have when its done.

There is an old technology called a "book". Most of us old timers have gained a lot of our knowledge from books.
I suggest any one from Autozone titled: How to Rebuild the Small-block Chevrolet or similar.
To "build" a performance engine you will need several books.
...and you won't find them on Twitter

 

I agree on the books. I recommend the three below which I have read. Helped me learn a lot and makes feel more comfortable to tackle an engine rebuild. Even if you decide to have somebody else do most of work, these books will allow you to speak knowledgably with them.

1) how to rebuild small block chevy - very well laid out book with numbered steps, info throughout and what parts to choose. Comes with two hour DVD showing rebuild. http://www.amazon.com/Rebuild-Small-...497122&sr=1-17

2) how to rebuild by David Vizard - similar to above but not laid out with numbered steps, just a sequence. People seem to say David is very methodical and recommend his books. Book info and engine tech a little older but recommened as another source to #1 above.

3) John Lingenfelter on rebuilding small block chevy - does not get into actual how to rebuild but more of why to do certain things and part combos. Also has good insight on TPI motors. Is worth while since book is $14. http://www.amazon.com/John-Lingenfel...497097&sr=1-12

 

Assembling an engine and building an engine are 2 different things. Have the machine shop put the shortblock together. You don't have all the proper measuring tools to make sure it's put together with the proper tolerances. Without proper experience or tools, your rebuild could cost you a lot more if it fails.

Cam, heads, intake etc is the easy part.

 

I would also recomend "How To Build Max Performance Small Blocks On A Budget",also by David Vizard,he is a very knowledgable fella,and I have learned a lot from his books.
