I think the fuel pump in my 86 TA (5.0 TPI) is bad. I tried to start it and nothing.....Sprayed a little starter fluid in there she fired right up. is there a way to test the fuel pump before dropping the tank because I have heard that is a pain in the @$$. I did a search and alot of people just ended up replacing the relay. Should I try that first the car has beem sitting for five years before I bought her. Anyone else have suggestions before I tackle the tank???

 

Get a fuel pressure gauge for fuel injection and attach it to the valve on the fuel rail. Turn the ignition on and see if you get fuel pressure.

If you don't, check the fuel pump fuse. If it's good, check the electrical resistance across the pump (from the relay would be a good place). If the resistance reads open, check the wiring to the pump. If it's good, apply 12 volts to the fuel pump power wire. If you get fuel pressure, you've got a problem with the relay. If all of the electricals checks out but either the pump doesn't run or doesn't produce pressure, replace the pump.
