Fuel smell, no idea where its coming from?
I recently noticed a fuel smell coming from my car. It seems to be coming from the rear of the car.
I have checked EVERYTHING fuel related (injectors, FPR, fuel lines, fuel filter......)to check for leaks and cant find anything out of the ordinary?
The car runs perfect. No miss or anything that would make me think there is a fuel related problem.
Its only after I shut the car off I smell it.
When the car is cold, I dont smell it at all.
The only thing I can think of is fumes escaping from the gas cap? How would i check that. Ill probably just replace it, but was looking for other ideas on what could be creating this smell.

Yes, wanna bet it's the filler neck, the soldering on mine broke because some prev. owner most likely used to lean on the filler nozzle whilst filling up. Willing to bet you have the same problem. Especially when filling it all the way up the fuel smell was horrendous.

fixed

Now I gotta say, that's some crappy soldering from the factory right there, especially on a part that is susceptible to stress because of people hanging on the filler nozzle...surely GM could have come up with that.

You shouldn't have raw gas burning in your cat con period, unless you want to torch the carpet that is.

A buddy of mine(WileECoyoteSr.) had the same funny smell. It turned out to be the rubber fuel/vent lines at the gas tank, they were old and had cracked. When you take down your tank to check the filler neck weld, check the rubber lines too!!! Those lines are a lot cheaper to replace then the tank

Re: Fuel smell, no idea where its coming from?
Nope no updates yet. I wont have time to pull the tank until probably the spring.
Not only that, my car hates to be on jack stands, i posted a while back about my "near death experience" with my current jack stands, and have been a little bit afraid to get back under the car. Long story short, if i had not left my floor jack slightly supporting the "pumpkin" as just a precaution i wouldnt be writing this right now.
That would be so cool if i get the tank replaced for free, that would mean i wont have to get under the car!

So have you even looked into whether or not your tank is part of that recall yet??? (Why Wait Until Spring To Find Out????)

Re: Fuel smell, no idea where its coming from?
The 2 things I would check would be the filler neck were it attaches to the tank, as others have noted, and the vent line. Also check to make sure the vent isn't clogged or stuck. The cause of the crack at the neck is usually from people trying to shortcut a fuelpump job and not removing the dif, like you're supposed to do. About the recall, I believe it was only for 91-92 camaros and recalls do expire, so even if there was a recall it's very likely that it has expired being that our cars are over 20yrs old(if not older).

You maybe very well right on that, 91 is included on that recall! And it has NOT expired yet(if they do?). A friend of mine WileECoyoteSr just did the recall on his,(about 3 weeks ago). The neck was still good, but the rubber lines from the tank were old, cracked, and leaking gas.

[I] had time to research the recall on alldata today at work.It is for 91and 92 camaros, and it is a lifetime recall. It said to do the recall regardless of time or ownership. I wonder if gm still has oe tanks or would they use aftermarket since they stop making parts ten years.
