high idle/ black exhaust smoke

84 trans am 305 4brl carb. A/T. car was idling like crap when cold then once warmed up would idle real high and then diesel once turned off. i found that bolts on carb were loose and tightened them up. made a big difference but i still get black smoke from the exhaust and the idle when warmed up is really high and will actually accelerate my car without any help. once in park the idle is very high at about 1500 or more. i looked over the forums and didnt really find anyone with similar problems and or no reponse to say how it was fixed. car was sitting for 4 years before purchased but has had a tune up minus oxygen sensor. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Sure sounds like the choke isn't opening up.

Re: high idle/ black exhaust smoke

Either your choke is stuck or your carb needs a rebuild, which would probably be a good idea anyway.

Re: high idle/ black exhaust smoke

i see a lot of threads where no one posts what the actual fix was so here is my fix for this issue. the choke was the main issue. it was getting power but not working properly. the other issue had something to do with a purge control for the carb. i forget what it was called. car now runs a whole heck of a lot better...THANKS EVERYONE!!!
