New starter, good batt, won't start, no lights, HELP

'86 305 auto....Son had car, ran rough, stalled , said he saw smoke, couldn't start, got towed.
Car had hard click and dome light worked, but wouldn't crank.
Replaced starter and now I have no click, no nothing, not even lights! Not even dome light. Any idea what I screwed up?
I placed two wires onto starter on same post as battery cable goes on and light weight wire on small stud nearest engine. Did all this with battery disconnected, then reconnected battery and...nothing.
Does not seem like any fuses are gone. Any ideas?
Thanks

check fusiblelinks at starter ,most of thems have about 5 links. You can usually pull A bad one apart with your fingers.

i believe that there are some fusible links close to the battery to check as well. you really need to give them a tug. lookin good isnt a good diagnosis. pull on them. get a test light and check the fuses for which has power (key on and key off) and which ones dont-it will start to steer you in the correct direction.

run a jumper wire from the solenoid start terminal up to the battery and try touching the battery positive terminal. by doing this you will take alot of wiring out of the loop and will see at least if you have good juice to the starter. make sure its in neutral if it is a manual tranny.

The solenoid start terminal is the small terminal?

if your solenoid is equipped with just a main battery (large terminal) and a start (small terminal) it is indeed the small terminal. some solenoids have an "r" terminal as well. for a total of 3 terminals. you want the small terminal closest to the block. with a flashlight you should see a small "s" molded into the solenoid as well.

You check your wiring that goes up to the starter? I once had a problem where nothing worked and eventually found out it was a busted wire down going down to the solenoid and starter sucked bad...took over a month for me to figure it out...XD
