Timing on 84 Z28 H.O.

I'm not sure how hard of a question this would be to answer without trial and error, but when I got a heater hose replaced last summer right after i bought my car, the timing was retarded back to the stock position, I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of where it should be set at now?

I have the 84 5.0 high output motor, plus 10.5 to 1 compression, edelbrock dual plane intake, 327-350hp cam from GM, .30 over, stock/tuned quadrajet

I ran into a guy about a week back that said something about going to 14 degrees, I'm not sure if he meant initial or to advance it by that much?

Also, what octane fuel can i run currently?

Thanks!

if you can get the engine started, you should be able to do the timing by ear, if you know how to. (just turn the distributer a little in either direction) move it around till it sounds best to you. smooth idle, resposive throtle. its not to hard. and regarding the octane, you may not believe this, but it really makes absolutly no difference. sounds like you got a beast on your hands.

I run my 84z h.o. at 12 degrees advanced. seems to like it there.

Yeah I've read a lot of things about 12 being a good number

Stock computer controlled carb and distributor? 6 degrees base (at idle, flat 4-wire connector disconnected).

Non-computer carb and distributor, 36 degrees total mechanical (vacuum advance disconnected, run RPMs up until no more advance, set that to 36 - which requires a dial-back timing light or a marked damper).

10.5:1 CR with iron heads? Figure on using the highest octane pump gas available.

How does that compare to the stock timing in terms of numbers?

Re: Timing on 84 Z28 H.O.

Ok so yesterday morning I took my car to the chevy dealer to get it timed, after school I ran out there to pick it up and of course the guy that actually worked on it wasn't there by the time I got there, so I have no idea where it sits in terms of numbers. But anyways, I went out back of the lot to get my car after I paid ($30 wasn't bad btw) and when I started it right off the bat I realized it idled around 750 now instead of the 1k it was at before, now being in WI with cold start stuff like this happens to my car a lot and i drive home and thought it'd take care of itself or I'd deal with it in the morning. So now today I drove it into school and when I was letting it warm up i saw that it still idles the same, and sounds almost like it's gonna die sometimes, but during the actual drive in, I noticed the car does run a lot smoother, it almost feels like it shifts and downshifts A LOT smoother, especially when I come to a stop But still when I put it in park and rev it up a bit it kinda hiccups from 750 until 1k then revs up smooth after that? Same thing when I take off from a stop light, it almost stalls for a bit before it gets to 1k? Do i just need to bump up my idle or what? :s
