Car dies after half throttle...

Hey everybody. I have an 89 Camaro with the 305 tpi. My problem is when the car is warmed up, anything over half throttle and the car just kind of dies. It does not accelerate anymore at WOT then it does halfway.

New ignition all around, new fuel filter, clean throttle body, new and adjusted IAC and TPS. The EGR valve is plugged, and I occasionally get a lean O2 sensor reading when sitting in traffic.

It seems to run MUCH better when its cold, and throttle response is 100% better then when its warmed up.

I can also kind of smell gas when I am at WOT.

Any thoughts?

Have you checked your fuel pressure ?

If possible scan the car with TTS Datamaster and see what values you gettig from every sensor..

How are your oxygen sensor feeling ? if its bad it will get problem when getting hot and going into closed loop

Re: Car dies after half throttle...

Never checked fuel pressure.

O2 sensor is interesting, because the car wasnt having this problem before a its mini rebuild, at which time I swapped to headers and y pipe which I got used, and used the O2 sensor that was in there. Would unplugging the O2 sensor real quick give me an indication of if its the problem or would it only make it worse?

Shouldnt a bad O2 sensor throw a code? Unfortunately I dont have a sensor of any kind or know anyone with one.

With headers, it is possible that your O2 sensor just doesn't stay hot enough, to give proper readings.... are you still using the one wire guy? or did you upgrade to a three wire? (heated) I don't think that is the entire problem though... need to check your fuel pressure first, and then be able to read what some of the sensors are telling the computer......

Yeah I'm almost positive its a one wire guy. I looked around before to try to find a fuel pressure gauge and couldnt find one (checked napa, advanced, etc.).

Re: Car dies after half throttle...

Buy an 3wire (pre heated) o2 sensor from TpiParts, Go with the AC Delco one, and dont forget to buy the adapter so its an easy install.

I changed from regular 1 wire to the pre-heated 3 wire one and it was like night and day...

So check fuelpressure and then change o2 sensor.

Re: Car dies after half throttle...

Would you happen to have the part number for delco sensor and maybe the adapter?

Re: Car dies after half throttle...

I sure have oversea friend

Adapter $26 : http://tpiparts.net/inc/sdetail/2167

Sensor $89 : http://tpiparts.net/inc/sdetail/2027

They are pretty expensive, but they last very very long and as said, I changed to a pre-heated and got so much better response and fuel economy.
