305ci Combo's - what have you got?
305ci Combo's - what have you got?
I am curious to see what people are doing to their 305s - specifically carby LG4 (up to 86) engines. I have read the 305 Performance threads, but I am interested to see what people on here are running and what the results are. Trying to get a feel for what works on these engines, as carby Chevs are still a bit alien to me.
So, what pistons, heads, cam, intake, stall converter, diff gears etc do you run? What sort of power and/or strip times do you get from your combo?

Had an 84' TA with 305 HO. Knew it had a couple of burnt valves on #1 & 3 then blew head gasket on right side. Figured since the engine had to come apart I should build it right. Orange Engine Builders went .060 with a 400 crank, new comp cams springs & lifters, manley valves, and new cam. Had a custom cam machined from Mr. Horsepower, Clay Smith Engineering. Dynoed at 325 rear wheel power and 362 ft lbs torque.
Clay Smith was able to design a great cam that gave great power and I still was able to pass CA Smog Test.

Re: 305ci Combo's - what have you got?
I let them pull the engine and do all of the machine work to the block and heads. Had stock 700R4 and stock 3.23 gear. Total cost was $2800 but my friend's father worked there. Never raced it because it was my daily driver and I did not want to risk tearing it up. Some punk with a 5.0 rustang, was drunk and clipped me on the 405.
The car spun and i was t-boned by a semi. I walked but my car was a totaled.
Stripped everything and sent bones to Pick - A - Part.

Here's the cheap option:
'86 LG4 - bone stock engine EXCEPT for the 90-shot, 3.73/Torsen:
13.1 sec @ 102 mph with stock TC, hoping for 12.9's with the S10 TC in it now. 25 mpg hwy.
