flat tappet to solid roller cam?

OK I have searched all morning long on a few sites and haven't found a clear answer.

I have a 70's era 350 block with a Doug Herbert solid lifter camshaft.
235/245 @.05
500/500
108lsa
With stock heads 72cc, HP peaked at 5400
Going with AFR 195,64cc eliminator
Can I just get a set of solid roller lifters, new cam and pushrods and be done with it?
Or not worth it just stick with a flat tappet.
I am trying to increase power below 6200rpm
It is race only but I do not want to push this short block to 6500

Re: flat tappet to solid roller cam?

a solid roller cam is always best for racing. you can get a cam request from comp for the best cam for your application. you can try retarding the cam to peak at a lower rpm. you can also try a smaller intake manifold and smaller exhaust pipes

Re: flat tappet to solid roller cam?

Yes, the cam will slide right into your existing cam bearings if you are very careful.

Don't forget to make sure you use a bronze or composite distributor gear.

Make absolutely sure the spring pressures of the AFR's are compatable with the Herbert cam.

A REV kit is not absolutely necessary, but recommended...many run OK without one.

DO NOT use oil restrictors of any kind! The rollers on the solid lifters will need all the oil they can possibly get.

Let the engine idle a little higher than you would a hydraulic...maybe 900-1100 so the cam can get extra splash oiling to cool it at idle. This will help longevity.

Use a thrust button on your timing chain cam gear to set camshaft endplay. (You might need a reinforced or aftermarket timing cover to keep the cam from walking forward).

Get the beefiest pushrods that will fit.

Following these general guidelines should get you going.

Re: flat tappet to solid roller cam?

Forget the bronze, melonized or composite gears, buy a cam with a pressed on iron gear, no worries ever again.

Re: flat tappet to solid roller cam?

skirkland;I did the cam quest on Comps website and the solid rollers suggested made average of 40hp more than the flat tappets, which lead me to this question.

Tinkerin;the Herbert cam is what I have now and will be replaced with the heads and proper springs will be purchased.

Twin;thanks for the tip

Thanks for the quick replies

Anymore info I need is appreciated

Merry Christmas to all
