What do I look for when my car diesels
Guys last night my car started dieseling when I shut it off. funny thing is it doesnt do it all the time and it did it again today. I've been driving the car for 2 months now I just got it back after doing the engine swap, The only two options I can think of are it being out of time, and low octane fuel... But that cant be the case, because i dont hear a spark knock. And as far as the time, well it just started so that cant be either right? Any thoughts and suggestions I'll take please.

Is it overheating? Just a theory but what it could be is that the bolt for your distributer adjustment may not be tight enough causing it to have advanced too much. Just a guess but I think that means the timing needs adjustment.

Vacuum leak, high idle, lean fuel mix, advanced timing/stuck advance plate or poor quality fuel can all cause this.

In the mean time, keep the transmission in gear when you shut off the engine. The load will help keep the engine from running on.

My dad used to have an old Buick and it dieseled in the drive for 15 or 20 minutes one time while we were eating dinner, it was funny as he!!...we used the leave it in gear method too.

The cause was the distributor being too far advanced due to the bolt not being tight enough, who'd guess... I drove it this long and the problem didnt show till 2 months after i start driving it. Thanks for the suggestion of leaving it in gear, never heard of it before but it was a tremendous help.

Sorry for the late response but I am glad you got it fixed. That is often the case and I had a similar experience with my car. Happy New Year.
