When to use longer valves?

When to use longer valves?
I am trying to decide to rebuild a set of stock heads and I am curious as to when or if you need longer than standard length valves? I'll be using comps XE268 cam (flat tappet), so there is not really that high of a lift. I will also be using the springs the Comp calls for to match the cam.
I am keeping this on the cheap since I already had these heads laying around. I hope in the near future I'll be able to get some better heads.

You need longer valves when you use a camshaft that requires a valve spring with a higher installed height. Using longer valves also requires different length pushrods to maintain the valve train geometry.

Thanks ... I have to check my pushrod length anyways because of the block being decked (I think .009).
Is the factory spring height is 1.70?
