head gasket question

I am in the process of putting my engine back together and got a gasket kit from fel-pro. I'm just looking for reassurance that I DON'T need to put a gasket sealant on the head gasket? Also, does it matter which side is up? The directions that came with the gasket kit didn't specify.

Thanks

Re: head gasket question

No sealant needed. Look on the face of the gaskets as sometimes they will say "UP" on them.

Re: head gasket question

As a reference, I use the bore "O" ring.

If you feel with your finger on both sides of the head gaskets you'll notice that one side's ring sits higher than the other side. That's the side that goes toward the head.

Absent any indication on the gaskets as to which side should face up OR an instruction sheet accompanying the gaskets, that's the way I decide.

Some may say it doesn't matter, but I continue to do WHAT WORKS.
