this might come in handy in solving a future or current problem for somebody
When I bought my car last month, I could drive it for 10-15 minutes just fine, but the longer I drove it, the worse it got. The check engine light would begin to flicker randomly, and the permormance would bog down almost exactly with the flicker. No codes were saved in the ECM
I read in my shop manual that this could be a problem with the ECM, or it could be a clogged fuel filter. well duh, I bought a fuel filter from NAPA and went to work. Despite the car has 176K miles on it, there was a delco filter installed. Cartainly that couldn't be the orginal filter, could it?
In any case, it's in the trash now, and I haven't seen a single check engine light flicker since then.

In my experience, when the filter starts to get plugged the engine experiences longer than normal crank times (TPI).
