88 idle problem.

Ok i bought my 88 iroc 305 tpi a few days ago and it runs good minus one little problem. Every once and a while i will crank it up and like allways cars rev til 1500 or so then go to idle like normal. The second mine comes to idle it just turns off. Ill crank it up again and the same thing then another two times + holding it at higher rpm to get it to warm up or clear the fuel system and i let off and it shuts off. until i get lucky and it decides to idle. I used to own a 2nd gen carbed and built and it would do that like when it was super cold like any other carbed car. So i figured the first time oh its just cold. Well i drove about 30 min on the freeway got home drove it around town for another half hour and thats when it did the idle thing leaving the gas station after filling up. Today it did it again leaving work. If anyone has had this problem or knows how to fix it PLEASE LMK asap. Its my daily so i depend on her alot. I did a cap rotor wires and plugs change and it cranks up way better but still randomly does that no idle thing. Thanks in advance...

Re: 88 idle problem.

Your description is a bit vague. Does it do this all the time? How frequent is this?

For some reason if I've just driven my car for a while (longer than 10 minutes) and I shut it off, then start it within 20 minutes of shutting it off, it fires up and will try and die as it comes back down to idle, I just need to rev it once and it smooths out.

Is this similar?

I am pretty sure it's the fuel filter, I have been meaning to replace it but I haven't found the time yet.

Well its kind of like that the only difference is if I Rev it up like you say it just kills it anyway.

Re: 88 idle problem.

Yes, definitely check the fuel pressure. You need a t-line that you can connect to the fuel rail (correct me if I'm wrong) that you can rent from auto zone, you leave a deposit and they refund the deposit upon return of the rented equipment.

Read the pressure and compare it with normal psi.

I'm not sure what the correct PSI rating for TPI's should be, 15-20 maybe?

Someone else can jump in and answer that.

Re: 88 idle problem.

fuel pressure should be in the 40-43 range for a tpi. Fuel filter is a must too.
