462 vs 882

ok, i currently have a set of 882s that ive torn down and magnafluxed... i know they flow good but have 76cc combustion chambers

i figured id get a set of 462s i found assembled for $150... 64cc and from what ive found, they flow the same as the 882s

so heres my dilemma... obv the 462s are gana have better compression, but i have found out my crank has a big scratch, $100 to repair, oh and i need new pistons

so my roommate has a complete rotating assembly and carb that hes willing to sell me for $350, crank is polished, pistons are forged .060 over with a .100 dome, and hes throwing in a rebuilt edlebrock 600cfm carb
if i buy this assembly ill have 9.6 compression with the 882s
so i could buy his parts and be good to go, or buy a crank on here or something, and buy .040 or .060 over pistons on here or from summit
what route should i go???

Have the 462s got accessory bolt holes?

Re: 462 vs 882

no they do not, but my dad is a salesman and does business with machine shops so im pretty sure theyd have a template for it... i also found another "camel hump" that has stainless valve, threaded studs, and push rod things for $350 but dont have the casting number

i saw someone on here say they ran 12.5 with these heads, dome pistons, performer rpm cam, 650 carb, and dual plane intake... so i think i would easily be making 300rwhp

Forget the 462s. Even if you try to drill the bolt holes in, they're going to go into the water jackets, and there still isn't enough thickness to cut many threads into.

Re: 462 vs 882

Dump both of those antique heads and pick up a set of Vortecs or any aftermarket replacement head. Even aluminum heads are better and cheaper than what it will cost to rebuild those old heads.

30+ years ago those were good heads but with the availability of aftermarket parts now, it's not worth using obsolete castings.
