462 double hump/camel back heads

ok i have the oppurtunity to get a set of the very rare and hard to find 462 casting double hump heads, i am currently building a 406 small block and i am wondering if these would be a good set of heads to go with, i plan on using a heavily ported/siamesed tpi setup with a 52mm throttle body, and i will port the heads and fit them for oversize valves, i can pick these up for $150 and it sounds like a good deal, any responses will be greatly appreciated thanks very much

What is so great about the 461 and 462, has anyone used them? I hear alot about them, but see nothing. Not willing to chance any engine buildup to 'test'...not that rich!

From: pgh,pa,
well if i had $850 it wouldnt be a problem to get a set of bad a$$ heads, however i am a very poor college student who will be doing his own porting work , and i was wondering if anyone knows what the flow numbers are on these heads, i have heard they have 180cc intake ports? is this true? i have also heard that they have 64cc chambers, i think with some porting work , i could have a great set of heads on a budget, any one else care to comment? thanks for the replies so far guys

The intake runners are in the 160cc range - way too small for a 406. and by the time you do valve job, valves, seals, guides, mill them,, you'll have $600 to 700 in them, Why waste your money? the chambers should be 64cc.

I have a set of heavly ported 461 casting that work great but, it tooks lots of time and lots of money to actually make them flow deciently. I will list all of the problems with the 461 castings and let you make the call. Their are no accessary bolt holes in the head, this makes it difficult to bolt into late model cars. The heads do not have hardned seats, you will have to install hardned seats to run unleaded gas. The heads were very prone to cracking, mine were cracked but I was able to fix them by welding and installing hardned seats. You will have to install screw in studs if you want to run over 300 LBS open pressure. The combustion chamber volume is suppossed to be 62.2 CC but mine were 66 CC so I angle milled them to get down to 62 CC. The port volume is 160 CC stock or 170 CC if you happen to have the very rare 461X castings. The stock flow numbers are not real impressive, they are similar to stock TPI 350 heads. The heads do have flow potential but it will take lots of work and knowledge to make them flow. Mine are flowing in the low 250 CFM on the intake and 190 CFM on the exhaust. I did everything I could do myself like the porting and installation of screw in studs but the machine work to install the seats and fix the guides still cost me over 500 dollars. This number does not include the cost of the heads or the stainless steel valves that were installed. If I was to do it over I would buy a set of Tick flow heads and save myself all the work.
