screeching belts

I just replaced all of my belts, and the belts are still screeching. i have them adjusted right, and i just put belt dressing on them, but still no good. if i rev the car the screech will go away, but if i turn anything on, the belts start screeching. what should i try?
P.S. i do not have the money to buy a serpentine set up right now.

Hate to make this worse on you but it sounds to me that your ac compressor bearings have gave out. Its not a cheap fix unless you can find a used ac compressor. I am a GM mechanic and I see this day in and day out on Trailblazers and alot of older cars.

Re: screeching belts

it might be a good idea to take the belts off, and try and spin every accessory by hand and see which one squeals. i dont have that much experience, but it almost sounds like an alternator going bad, cause of what you said about turning things on. its also possible that the A/C compressor is bad, but i have seen it where two things went at once, and its a pain to have to pull the belt off, replace one thing, only to find something else screeching. just a suggestion.

Re: screeching belts

this might be a stupid question, but do you have the right belts? it could be your water pump too. its possible that anything belt driven has gone bad. i would check them all just to be sure.

Hello wabbitslayer!!

Take your belts off, and clean up the pulleys using emory cloth and/or a wire brush!! Make sure you get all the way around, and deep into the pulley!! Re install the belts, tighten them up, start your car, and check for the squealing!!! If it squeals again, use a bar of soap to temporarliy quieten them!! Be careful around the moving belts, take the bar of soap, and carefully hold it against the sides of the belt, using only light pressure, and don't forget the underside of the belt!! This will help you to isolate which belt is squealing!!

20 years ago, I had a strange noise that I thought was the water pump about to crap out!! Turned out to be the belt!! It sounded like a bad bearing, I did the above "fix", and presto it was gone!!

Soap bar in the tool box ever since!!

Best of luck, watch out for the moving belts, they like to grab fingers, sleeves, long hair, watches, etc!!!

P.S. Last month my son, and I changed his 23 year old original belts, the new ones started squealing, we cleaned up the pulleys, and did the soap fix, no squealing!!

thanks for the idea i will give it a shot, the pulls are a bit rusted so i will try it, but it could be a bearing, and if it is im just going to save my money for the serpentine set up.

Re: screeching belts

Take a spray bottle full of water(like windex bottle) and squirt the belt at each pulley. If one makes it go quiet then you will want to inspect that.
Also you could try reversing the belts. Sometimes you just get a noisy belt.

Re: screeching belts

just because the alternator is new doesnt mean anything. is it new new or remaned? ive seen alot of new alternators fail within a few weeks because of bad bearings, diodes ect. take the belts off again and spin everything by hand.

Hello wabbitslayer!!

Hopefully you found your problem, "belts or bearings"!!

If you go the serpentine route, the water pump is "reverse flow" (spins backwards) from what you have now, so new water pump needed!! Everything else spins the same way I do believe, of course the pulleys will have to be different, flats and multi-ribs vs grooves and multi-ribs!!

I would suggest that you change out all accessories if they have high mileage on them, you would hate to be "chasing the dogs tail" so to speak, with one part failing after another!!!

The serpentine route can be costly initially, but usually pays off in the long run, as parts (bearings) shouldn't fail as often due to over tightening, which puts damaging side loads on the bearings!!
