Engine dies at idle and backfires between shifts

Hello all,
New here and have a 88 IROC with the 305. Recently replaced the distributor put new plugs wires cap and rotor. I set the timming to 4 deg before TDC. Some days the car runs good, then others not so. On bad days it will die everytime I push in the clutch. When shifting you can hear kinda a "bubbleing" sound out of the muffler, I know thats a funny description but its a sort of back fire although not a loud shot. I dont know what else to check, sounds like a timming issue but it seems to be where its supposed to be. Thanks for any input.
Scott

What procedure did you use to set the timing? Is this a carb?

Its fuel injected, I removed num 1 plug, put my finger over the hole and manually turned the engine over till it blew my finger off. I then set the rotor roughly between num 1 and num 8 plug wires. Then fine tuned the timming with my timming light.
