1986 Camaro 305 Carb WONT START
Ok so heres the deal. My car wont start. Fix it. Kthanxbai
Anyway lol, So Ive changed out the computer controlled distributer & the quadrajet, now edlebrock 1406. It now has a new starter aswell. We have it top dead center & all that swell stuff but it wont start. When you turn the key its just nice & smooth(love the new starter lmao) but it wont ****ing start. It also has a new coil on the cap & new battery.
On top of all that when you put the new timing light doesnt work on it but the timing light is just fine because we tested it on a different vehicle and walla it works. So I was told it could be the ECM? What else would cause my camaro not to start, its really bugging the **** out of me & spring break is next week, would hate to waste it sitting at home. Thanks!

You don't have spark. Without spark, it won't trigger the timing light and won't ignite the fuel/air mixture.
Verify your hookups, that you have power to the coil, etc.
When you took off the q-jet and replaced the distributor, you took the ECM out of the equation.
Sorry to hear you removed the best street performance system out there for this downgrade.

Ooo that totally didnt enter my mind, sweet no ecm worries. More like removed a pain in the ***. Anyway I'm getting spark, forgot to mention that so the next thing would be the ingnition module on the new distributer, what do you think?

so then the engine does turn over when you turn the key, it just doesn't fire up?..... well makes sure you're getting fire at the number 1 cylinder, pull the boot off and check it there... just because the coil is new doesn't mean you got a working one... if you have the old one, throw it on and see what happens...

It is getting fire, is it possible not getting enough spark to start up?

Re: 1986 Camaro 305 Carb WONT START
what about the carbs jets, did you do the primary adjustment or is this done from the factory? You can close the jets all the way right? preventing fuel from entering or not? I remember on my Electronic Quadra-Junk, closing the jets and my car stalling and not starting until I opened up a little....

Let's back up here before something or someone gets damaged. Set the can of starting fluid down and back away.
Have you taken a spark plug wire off of a spark plug, put in near a ground and cranked it over to look for spark? Another way is to put a spark plug on the wire, put the plug on a good ground, and turn it over and watch for the plug sparking.
You do understand that the #1 piston comes to TDC twice in one rotation of the distributor, right? In other words, when the #1 piston is at TDC, the engine is either on the #1 or #6 firing position.
Do you know whether or not you have gas in the carb?

Ive also had the distributer replaced, the new one. So whats the chances of both being bad and working at random?

Re: 1986 Camaro 305 Carb WONT START
let's update your list of things you have replace... have you checked the ignition module? you say you replaced the distributor, did it come with a new module? since you bypassed the computer, your distributor is now mechanical advance right?

Re: 1986 Camaro 305 Carb WONT START
Ayway not to uselessly bump this but I got it finished and tuned weeks and weeks ago, never been happier =]
To all you quadrajet lovers, even after rebuilt after rebuilt on that carb its been pathetic and dont begin to tell me it was the mechanic XD So anyway what I thought was a horribly transmission was 80% carbs fault. Runs like a champ and has never started with so much ease before =]
And it seems mpg has gotten better as well ^^ Seems to smoke alil more on start up but thats a different story =] Wooo!!!
