84 carbed bad engine knock

I need any and all help possible i really dont know whats wrong.

Lets start out that i am an idiot. I put the car up in storage for a winter on gravel and did not check fluid levels when i took it out. The problem is that the oil drained in the gravel and i didnt notice until it was too late and the engine seized while driving. I got it home and put in fresh oil it started right up and ran fine in idol but when i revved it to about 2k rpm it gets a realy loud knock.
I was told it was probably a spun crank bearing. If this is the case would i be better of rebuilding or getting a new one?

The car is an '84 Berlinetta with a 305 and the original quadrajet carb.

Thank you in advance for any and all help!

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Bearings rarely spin. They are often wiped out, though, typically from lack of sufficient lubrication.

Replacing the bearing pretty much means rebuilding the engine.

Re: 84 carbed bad engine knock

well the engine as far as i know is all original and leaks pretty bad anyways. so if im gonna do a rebuild how much would it cost versus getting a fairly cheap short or long block from say summit racing and finishing that with the after market intake i already have?

Personally, I wouldn't bother rebuilding a 305 shortblock.

A 350 shortblock, or rebuilding a JY 350, won't cost any more than rebuilding a 305. If you have any inclination in that direction, I'd say do it.

Re: 84 carbed bad engine knock

get the short block. you'll have less money and less time in your project.
if you do it yourself be ready to spend some cash unless you work at a machine shop and have extra parts lying around.
building an engine gets exspensive quick. the odds are your engine has over 100 thousand miles on it, so there is no telling what damage has been done enternally. plus, if you get a 350 you'll be way happier with the performance.

Re: 84 carbed bad engine knock

i was thinking of doing the 350 swap so i will deffinatly do that but what way would be cheaper getting a block from some one or a junk yard or just swapping parts off the old 305 to something like this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-10067353/

because if i start with a used block i have to get it hot tanked and machined then have the heads machined to match plus all the other fun stuff right?

Depends what shape the block and heads are in to begin with.

Re: 84 carbed bad engine knock

it sounds good but for all you know this was the first engine he has ever built. go for an engine with warranty. you can look in a bargain hunter or online and find an engine shop near you that will sale you a long block 350 for 700-800 bucks. most of them will stand behind it for so many miles.
you'll be a lot happier with that than you would be buying from some stranger. a good machine shop will give you a 30 over block with 882 heads. all you'll need is a water pump and intake and you'll be on your way.

Re: 84 carbed bad engine knock

here is a good example- kannapolis engines-1-704-857-7416. they will sale you a long block 350 for 750 bucks with warranty. i bought my heads from these guys and my brother has purchased a 350 chevy engine and he got a engine for his toyota tocoma from them.
so check around your area because i know someone near you will do the same.
