Distributor/plug wire location help

Can anybody provide a diagram or a link to a diagram that shows where each plug wire should run to on the distributor cap for an 89 TPI stock 5.7liter. I think the distributor may have been installed way off before I got the car. I'm thinking I may have to pull the distributor, find TDC, and reinstall the thing to put my mind at ease!!!

I've attached a diagram of the how I found the wires connected on the cap and what cylinder they were run to. I didnt number the other ones because I stopped caring after I seen what a mess this was. According to my hanes manual these connections are way off.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Distributor/plug wire location help

It's gotta go around the cap in a clockwise direction according to the engine's firing order. 18436572.

#1 can be in any position on the cap depending on where the rotor was pointed when the distributor was dropped in (shooting for #1 at the front/driver's side position is most common) but it'll run fine in any position if the timing is correct and the plug wires are in proper firing order.

Re: Distributor/plug wire location help

MI ROC-Z, it appears your #1 is off by one if you drew it exactly how it is. it should be over one more to it's right. (your first unlabeled terminal)
you're diagram should be like this, starting at #1 and work in a clockwise direction,

1 that is correct
8 no label. make it #8
4 correct
3 no label. make it #3
6 correct
3 should be #5 make it #5
7 correct
2 correct.

if you try it with the #1 wire as it is you might have to move them all one over to their right. you might want to just go ahead and put the engine at TDC on the #1 to make sure it's pointed to the #1 terminal if it doesn't run right after you put the wires on correct.

Re: Distributor/plug wire location help

thanks for the input, I'm gonna get this stuff ironed out tonight, along with soldering in my replacement coolant fan switch wire pigtail that I just got in the mail today. Wish me luck!!!
