Casting number with engine in car

What is the best way to see the casting # with the engine in the car? what would need to be removed, if anything? I cannot seem to see it.

Thanks

It should be behind the alternator on the front passenger side of the block.

I looked there but didn't see it. My alt is on driver side, My ac compressor was on pass side which was removed and I have the delete pully there. Should I remove that?
Edit: Isn't that where the production date code only is?

Its on the back "deck" of the block behind the driver side cylinder head. You'll probably need a mirror and a light to read it. Or you can crawl under the car and get the last three digits of the casting number on the sides of the block. Either side will do. It will take longer to figure out what you've got but it works.

That is the 627 # that is on the bottom of both sides then. The stuff in the way of the driver side is the wiper motor some wires and hoses. I will have to fool around next time I have time.

#627 indicates a 305.
