Re: help with starter please!

Your pics just show the wires on the top side. There are 2 large bolts on the bottom side - that's all that holds it in. Disconnect battery, disconnect wires from starter, then remove the 2 large bolts from underneath. That sucker is heavy (20 pounds that feels like 50), so watch the face! The bolts should be 14mm or 9/16 (don't remember which). Then just wiggle that heavy sucker out of there past the exhaust and a-arm.

Re: help with starter please!

Update: i had a few car guys help me install the altenator so all that is in including battery which I charged as much as my charger lets me but still the car wont do squat? when i turn the key there is nothing no cranking or anything unlike before when it would crank for a split second and die.

so is this probaly the starter then? im soooo close to getting the starter out but my problem i cant figure out how to get the bolt out of the bracket that holds it in because there isnt enough room to slide the bolt out??? HELP!

Re: help with starter please!

I have no idea what your talking about when you say bracket - I've never seen any SBC starter have any bracket on it. Are you trying to remove the starter from the solenoid perhaps? The whole thing comes out as one unit - two round pieces connected together, 1 the sixe of a beer can, the other twice it's size or bigger - they don't seperate. There are only 2 bolts holding the starter to the block, both 9/16ths, both accessible from the bottom only - that's it. Then you wiggle it out past the exhaust piping and a-arm.

i'll get some pictures then its hard to describe.
ok in the first pic you can see the bolt in the middle there is a bolt in front and behind that bracket. and in the 2nd/3rd pics you can see the two bolts i removed and then in the fourth there is the wires and ground i removed.

Many of the old style Delco starters have a support brace ( looks like a piece of angle iron ) off the front of starter to the block
Easiest to undo the bolt to the block and remove starter with brace attached

Well I've never seen anything like that before, and I've worked on chevy's back to 1970 models. So I learned something new today!

It is one of those delete options.
Most are too lazy to reinstall it when they do a starter swap despite the fact it takes a lot of weight off the starter bolts

Did you read what I wrote above?
Undo the bolt holding the brace to the block and if you still can't get the brace off the starter, remove starter with brace attached

Re: help with starter please!

I am having major brain fart!!

I'll look at ours 2morrow, however;

IIRC, there will be 2 different sized " eyelets " or " lugs " connected to the wires that the studs on the starter pass thru.

The bigger eyelet(s) will go to the big stud that says " BAT "
The smaller eyelet(s) will go to the stud that is marked " s "

sorry but what do you mean by eyelets and lugs do you mean just the style of the ground? i finally got the starter in place (by myself ) but im guessing on the wires where they go but anyhow when i got the wires in my guessed places i connected the neg battery wire to the batt but the interior light or anything wouldnt come on so im charging the battery right now if its that.
edit: so i took the batt of the charger since it shows its full but nothing still wont come on and both terminals are connected tightly???
