Re: Wheres the esc on a 91 Formula?
the knock module is part of the MEMCAL inside the ECM.
occasionally it does go bad, but not very often. a bad ECM is more likely, but also not probable.
i've seen excessive engine noise cause a code 43. but usually if the motor is making that much noise, you've already parked the car.
sometimes the ignition module in the distributor can be the cause of code 43.
the knock sensor may not have a good ground to the block. even though its screwed into the block and because it goes in to the water jacket, rust and corrosion can cause a poor ground. when trouble shooting a code 43 and if you remove the old sensor, its usually best to replace it with a new one because odds are you'll damage the old sensor when you remove it from the block.
the knock sensor could be bad.
they do go out, but not very often. a knock sensor is more likely to be bad because it is physically damaged.
knock sensors have a piece of crystal in them and are rather fragile, more so than a spark plug.
simply dropping a knock sensor on a hard surface can damage it.
left along in the block, they normally have a very long life.
using the wrong knock sensor for the application will cause code 43.
there could be a problem with the wire from the knock sensor to the ECM. the wire itself could be damaged, shorted out, or just a bad connection or unplugged at the knock sensor.
its pretty common for either the plug or knock sensor, and many times both to get damaged when replacing the starter, which is the most common cause of a code 43.
