New to the forums, couple questions about a fuel pump replacement

Hey there, I just got my 89 2.8 a couple weeks ago kind of as a project car to work on with my uncle, and i wanted to ask a couple questions.

#1. Is the fuel pump located inside the gas tank or outside the gas tank on the 89 2.8?

#2. I was looking at parts online and they said something about needing to replace the wiring harness if I replace the fuel pump, is this true?

#3. Besides dropping the gas tank, what else do I need to do to successfully change it out?

Sorry for the newbie questions, but we all gotta start somewhere huh?

Thanks much!

P.S. Sorry if i posted this in the wrong sub-forum but I could find one that would be more appropriate.

well first thing to do is stock up on some tylenol or advil..

you will have to drop the tank, but first you will have to drop the rear end, and you will have to either move or drop the exhaust as well... all this is in order to be able to drop the tank...

You dont need to drop the rear, Ive removed the tank more than once and the rear has never been dropped. If you replace the pump with a stock replacement, it should be plug and play. To get the tank out you need to remove the black plastic from under the filler door, its just held on with 3 screws. Then jack the car up and remove the exhaust where it goes over the axle and the muffler. Then you remove the heatshield (if its still there). Then you remove the panhard bar and other support bar for the rear. Then you pull the 2 support straps, and bend them out of the way. then you start the fight with the tank. I always wind up having to bend the filler neck to get it out, but as long as its not rusted through and you dont just hang on it, you can bend it slowly without issues.

I was wondering, do they sell an under hood replacment fuel pump for our cars, or do we have to use the intake one.

regardless, if it's busted, you will "HAVE TO" remove the tank... even if you just install an inline fuel pump in place of the in tank, you will have to remove the old pump from the tank, otherwise there will be an obstruction in the flow of fuel...

Re: New to the forums, couple questions about a fuel pump replacement

I put a carberated 2.8 in a 86 comaro once,i just unplugged power to the intank pump, and the motor ran fine with its mechanical pump. since this worked, i was thinkin maybe an aftermarket 'under hood' pump might do the trick. the reason i'm wonderin is because my pump seems to be dieing, and i dont want to drop the tank.

It might work, but the extra strain on the new pump pulling fuel through the dead pump greatly shortens its life expectancy. Plus you very likely will run into a fuel starvation issue. Just drop the tank.
