89 iroc dying out, smoking

hey guys, i have an 89 iroc 305 (5.0 ) TPI 5 speed. So sometimes when i am coming to a stop the car will die out. i will turn the ignition real quick and it will start right back up. ( scary sometimes ) It will throw the check engine light on before it dies out, but sometimes the light will come on and it will be fine. i also noticed once it dies out, if i am at a stop light or just ideling, the car will smoke a little bit. i am thinking it is the egr valve but i am not sure. i have not hooked it to an obd1 yet. please help me

the first few things i would check are the codes, your timing, and if you can hold a steady idle while in drive with the brakes full on. Also see if you get an rpm change depending on how hard you press down on the brake pedal.

Re: 89 iroc dying out, smoking

Do you know if your car is always smoking or only when it is about to die? Because my car is constantly smoking especially at startup and I believe it is faulty valve seals but I still haven't fixed the problem yet.. However about the car dying it wouldn't hurt to check dirty fuel filters and injectors...
