INTERMITANT SPARK FROM THE DISTRIBUTOR

I AM HAVING PROBLEMS MAINTAINING A SPARK FROM MY DISTRIBUTOR, IT A BRAND NEW ON I HAVE GOT IT TO SPARK A FEW TIMES AND START IT WILL START ABOUT 2 TO 5 TIMES AND BE FINE BUT IF I LET IT SIT FOR AND PERIOD OF TIME OVER 20 MINNUTES IT LOSES ITS SPARK AND I HAVE TO TAKE IT APART AND TRY TO GETA SPARK AGAIN ANY SUGESTIONS ON WHAT COULD BE HAPPENING

CAP-SIZE

Wire up a small 12 volt bulb (a side marker bulb works best).

Connect one lead to the coil primary
(the ignition module side not the key side) and the other lead to ground.

The next time the engine refuses to start observe if the bulb is pulsing.

Observe and report.

OK, if you’re getting pulses into the coil when trying to start, but no spark coming out of the coil, the coil is bad.

I PUT A BRAND NEW COIL IN AND I AM STILL GETTING NO SPARK ALSO CHANGED THE CAP AND ROTOR AGAIN COULD IT BE ELSEWHERE IN THE DISTRIBUTOR THE PICK UP OR IGNITION MODULE

is it a procomp distributor? they've had a lot of problems with those.

The only way the distributor could be at fault is if it was grounding the coil secondary, and you can determine that by removing the center wire from the dist, connecting that wire to a loose plug, alligator the ground part of the plug to engine ground, crank and see if have spark in that plug.

Due to the fact you said you have pulses going into the coil, assuming your observations are correct,
(it’s easy for the novice to mistake the 12 volt fluctuation imposed by the starter motor for pulses) the coil is getting enuff input to render output.

got my camaro started again it was a bad distributor it had a pad pick up
