oil

O'Reilleys had a crazy deal on their store brand synthetic oil with a mobil one filter.

The salesman told me their synthetic oil is repackaged Mobil one. Does anyone know if this is true?

Well I did the oil change today. The funny thing is... the computer says I needed 6 quarts of oil. I only needed 4.5 quarts for the change. Does this seem right?

Thanks,
Bill

P.S. My oil level is ever so slightly above the max, but my car burns oil, so I like to top it off. Is this going to flood the engine or cause problems?

Re: oil

I'll probably get a major bashing for saying this from the more hard-core folks, but IMO, as long as the oil is changed regularly and often (like every 3000 miles religiously), I've never seen any ill effects from even Wal-Mart brand oil.

Now - after saying that, I've never ran Wally World oil in my Camaro - I've always used Castrol - it's just what I started using, and continued using out of habit I guess.

But I run the cheapest no-name oil I can get in my old beater Bronco II, and I've never seen any issues even when I rebuilt the top-end last year - it's got 275,000 miles. But I always change every 3000 miles. And the Bronco rarely sees any highway (ie no long trips) - it just a beater - snow, bad weather, tow boat to the lake, trips to junkyard, etc.

But to me, better money is spent on filter choice, as long as oil is changed often.

Re: oil

does o'reilly have there own oil refinery ? NO , neither does advance , wal-mart , autozone etc. , etc. . where do they get their oil ? who knows for sure . bobistheoilguy has more info. than one can absorb . the more you ask the more confused one can get . for the most part on a street engine , if it meets all the latest API/SAE specs. it should be o.k. . good luck .
