Upgrading 84 L69
Anyone got any ideas on some upgrades to get this car around 300 hp without changing to much stuff? I got a 383 stroker getting built right now, but its gonna be a few months before its ready. Just looking for some "KNOWN" good upgrades to get me around 300 HP until my motor is ready.
THanks

There's only 2 ways to reach your goal, pick one. Either bolt on a plate nitrous kit, or do milled Vortec heads and a suitable cam. the heads require a matching intake, so the up-front costs are higher, but with deep-dish pistons in the 383, you can swap the Vortecs on to that.
Nitrous is cheaper initially, but the bottle refills add up.

Re: Upgrading 84 L69
I was wanting quick upgrades for the stock 305 H.O. without making too many drastic changes.
I have trickflow 23 heads going on the 383.
For the stock 305 I was thinking more of camshaft/intake/carb maybe a geared timing set. Any suggestions? Just trying to get a bit more hp and scraping the quadrajunk is a must! Any model preferences based on current setups anyone has?

Yeah, that's not gonna get you to 300 horses. Q-Jets aren't hard to get right, and when they are right, there's no other carb that can touch them. Holley has even publicly stated as much.

Re: Upgrading 84 L69
It must be a "me" thing with the quadrajet then cuz ive had 3 of them on a 305 and 1 on a 3.8 buick and all of them kept having the same problem over and over. The accelerator pump either quits working or keeps sticking. And the float sticks when its cold. I keep hearing bad things about edelbrock, but i had a 1406 performer on one of the camaros and got it set and never had 1 problem with it. But didnt holley make the quadrajet?

Rochester made the Q-Jet, Holley's Holley2 division remanufactures them. If you're having trouble with worn-out QJs, maybe it's because you're playing with worn out versions?
I love Edelbrocks, and I know atilla prefers them over Holleys, while five7kid prefers Q-Jets over Holley, but Holley over Edelbrock. I like the simplicity of just calling Demon directly, then bolting on whatever they send. My mpg isn't what it would be with a QJ, but the driveability is always perfect.
Lots of people get upset by Atilla's style, but his answers are always factual, and when there's more than 1 correct answer, his is the best.
