spedo goes on and off

Axle/Gears: 3.70 9-bolt
spedo goes on and off
My spedo cut out every once in a while then one day it just quit all together.
I replaced the VSS and now it works... kinda. Every few seconds it works then it cuts out for a few seconds and back and forth like that.
Did I put the gear back in incorrectly? Is it the sensor at the back of the spedo? Is the new VSS incompatable?
Ideas?
