Engine running rich Please help

Ok this car is driving me crazy! I had the car in the body shop for nearly 2 years and it ran great before putting it there. After I got it back the car runs like crap! I have replaced the distributor, fuel injectors, plugs, and fuel filter. It runs better now, but it is still smokes and has the bad odor of fuel. I am not getting any codes and the car idles ok (slight stumble now and then) and revs fine. I checked the fuel pressure and its right on the money. The only odd thing I can find is the fact that the timing mark jumps from 6 to 12 when it is revved up (the ecm was disabled with the tan wire), and then returns to 6 when you let off the accerator. the engine is a 305 TPI with 62k miles on it. Any suggestions?

Re: Engine running rich Please help

Check for FPR leaks, bad MAF/MAP sensor, bad IAT, bad TPS, bad O2 sensor. The unfortunate part of OBDI is it will rarely tell you when you car is slightly off base. It only throws codes if a sensor or device is almost completely not working. I would recommend a scan tool or a datalogging cable and laptop - then you can see the real values of your sensors and can pinpoint which item is messing you up.

As for the distributor - someone more wise will have to verify (or deny) this: I think, even with the ESC disabled, the distributor will still advance itself as it gets to the higher RPMs just to keep the engine running/prevent damage.

Please also provide us with the year of your car (or ECM system, if you switched it).

It's "limp home mode", and it only advances minimally for a given RPM.

Re: Engine running rich Please help

Checked for vac leaks and found none. Looks like the local parts store is going to love me as I dont have a the capabilities to perform the datalogging. I will keep you posted and let you know what I find.

Hello GusbZConv!!

The HEI module has a built in spark advance, for use during the "Limp Home Mode"

Check your CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) to see if it's out of phase, this will give you rich running/higher idle!!

Re: Engine running rich Please help

87Iroc-Dan61 thanks for the replay - that might make since it seems to not smoke on start up and really stinks when warm. Today I adjusted the TPS and checked the IAC with no luck. Car seems to not want to start on the first try, but once it starts it runs fine, other than it runs really rich??? Next things on my list to check is the coolant temp sensor and the O2. I will keep you posted on my progress!

Re: Engine running rich Please help

Guys thanks for the help, but after many hours of work on this car and many $$$ I AND my finace nave come to the conclusion we will NEVER own another Chevrolet product ever again! I have always owned Ford products and in fact I have a 2007 F-150 and a 2006 Fusion in my drive as I type this message. I bought it from the original owners and restored it. I have many hours into it and Is has alot of new parts. Interior is mint. I am aking $12000 OBO - pics included

Re: Engine running rich Please help

You need to understand, these cars are like females. They have many very sensitive parts which must all be tuned and adjusted with care. One wrong move and it may never run right. But, with much patience and care, they can very satisfying. A Ford, on the other hand, just has a simple on/off switch, much like a male.
